Edinburgh, a poem in stone

Glenfiddich, Talisker, Oban.....does this ring a bell or two? Yes, I am back from the land of Scotch!

I had studied a lot about British and Scottish history, the battles and the castles. Being a fan of Harry Potter, I wanted to witness the Hogwarts Express, after watching Braveheart several times, I wanted to explore the Western Highlands to the core, being a fan of the TV series Game of Thrones, I wanted to tour the castles and the grasslands.

Well, I would say Scotland is a lot more than that. We were in Edinburgh, the inspiring capital of Scotland, a historic cosmopolitan and a cultural city. This city is over a thousand years old and is built over a city, this is what makes this place so unique and exquisite.

Edinburgh is a poem in stone. It's stanzas perfectly describe the old town and the age-blackened monuments. Edinburgh is a city of light and dark, of height and depth, of lanes and vaults, of old and even the older. If you will hang out with the locals you will hear never-ending stories of the war, history and even horror.

Edinburgh Castle dominates the city-centre skyline and from its ramparts you can look down on medieval lanes and elegant, sweeping terraces that hold over a thousand years of history, mystery and tradition. I went to bars and pubs that were over 300 years old in the old town and were so rustic and unique.

The setting is wonderfully striking; the city is perched on a series of extinct volcanoes and the Edinburgh castle is itself built on an dormant volcano. I just loved hanging around in the old town of Edinburgh, listening to the bagpiper, trying the cuisines, socializing with the locals and getting to know their culture better.

Edinburgh is such a special place, whose meaning like a poem appears differently to different tourists. I would say that Edinburgh is a city of great culture and history. Edinburgh is so un-explicable and unnameable that makes it one of my favorite historical places on the earth.

Placed to visit (Must do's):
Royal Mile (Old Town)
Underground Historical Tour of the vaults
Calton Hill (often called the Athens of the North)
Arthurs' seat (hike to a dormant volcano with beautiful views of the city)
