What is it like to hike in the Arches Nat'l park?

We explored the red sandstone topography at Arches after going gaga over nature at Yellowstone National Park (YNP). We were at Moab, Utah for 2 days to visit the Arches, Canyonlands & the Dead Horse National Parks. Moab is a small town in Utah which is around 200 miles from Salt Lake City. We stayed at a B&B called Desert Hills. It's a quaint and beautiful place managed by a great couple called Anne & Vic. They took good care of us and we felt just at home there. I would recommend this place to everyone visiting Moab.

1st day- We headed out for our adventure with the Arches. It seemed so different after seeing all the greenery at Yellowstone. The mountains are crafted out of red sandstone and the topography looked amazing. We did a 3 mile hike to the Delicate Arch and it was a tough one indeed . The 3 mile hike seemed like a 30 mile hike. I was totally exhausted till the time  we reached the Arch, but it was truly worth it.

Arches are a splendid work by nature. Hundreds of years back, very high winds had cut the rocks in shape of Arches. Hundreds of arches have been discovered in the region till date and some are discovered every year by geologists and Trekkers. Some of the arches are really beautiful and it makes you wonder at the beauty of nature. After the Delicate Arch, we went to the Double arch, Balanced rock, Landscape arch etc. It is highly recommended that one should see the sunset at the Window Arches, so we timed our day well and were at the Windows for the sunset. The view was just spectacular. The rays on the setting sun could be seen on the red rocks which made it look beautiful. We clicked pictures from all angles and retired to bed after a hectic day. There are nice places to dine out at Moab. A hummer ride or a ATV tour are highly recommended if you prefer some adventure.

2nd day- We went to the Deadhorse and Canyonlands National Parks. These two parks are different altogether and have different entries. The topology is different in these two places and are definitely worth visiting. The bow-tie mesa at the Deadhorse was beautiful and panoramic.

After the long and tiring vacation we headed back to NYC. All I would say is, don't miss out on this amazing work by nature, it is worth a visit. Happy Travelling !

Some Recommendations
  • Best time to visit: Summer is definitely best time to visit Arches, but some weeks its too hot and it goes in 90's. In the spring, the daily temperatures at Arches generally reach the 70s, and nighttime temperatures seldom go below 40 degrees F.
  • Places to stay- Moab is the small town in Utah which serves as a corridor to the Arches, Deadhorse and the Canyonlands National Parks. There are some lodges and B&B's in Moab to stay. We stayed at a great B&B called Desert hills , run by an extremely hospitable innkeepers- Anna & Vic.
